['pɪərɪ], Robert Edwin, amerikanischer Nordpolarforscher, * Cresson Springs (Pa.) 6. 5. 1856, ✝ Washington (D. C.) 20. 2. 1920; erforschte seit 1886 Grönland und stellte 1901 durch Umfahrung im Norden dessen Inselnatur fest. Er erforschte 1905 Grinnell- und Grantland, von wo aus er nach Norden bis 87º 6' nördliche Breite (6. 3. 1906 vorstieß. Von Grantland aus versuchte er, zum Nordpol vorzudringen. Ob er dessen unmittelbare Nähe am 6. 4. 1909 wirklich erreicht hat, ist bis heute umstritten. Neue photogrammetrische Untersuchungen von Fotos am Zielort sprechen dafür. - F. A. Cook behauptete, den Pol schon am 21. 4. 1908 erreicht zu haben. - Nach Peary benannt sind: der Peary-Kanal (Peary-Fjord, Independence-Fjord) und das bis 2 000 m über dem Meeresspiegel hohe Pearyland in Nordgrönland, das der Fjord vom Mylius-Erichsen-Land trennt.
